The South-West (Sud-Ouest) is one of the most diverse, beautiful and authentic
regions of France. Some of it's most famous sub-regions are: Gascogne (stomping grounds of
Cyrano de Bergerac), Pays-Basque (the Basque region), Périgord (famous
for its fois gras) and Dordogne.
The Sud-Ouest covers a stretch of land delimited by Toulouse in the West, Perigueux in the North, the Atlantic Ocean in the East and Spain in the South. Some of its most well known cities are: Bordeaux, Toulouse, Biarritz and Lourdes, but it also offers thousands of lesser known cities, villages and hamlets.
Specifics of the Region:
The South-West (Sud-Ouest) has a strong and diverse
cultural heritage. Most sub-regions have their own dialects, specialty foods and local
social customs. Because these areas have received such little outside influences
over the years (especially when compared to more touristy areas such as Provence)
they've managed to maintain a higher level of cultural authenticity. This
makes the Sud-Ouest particularly unique. Many villages of the
region have preserved their historical roots, and some even have ancient structures dating back to the
time of the Romans. Often, these structures aren't even commercially promoted. Now
that's nearly too authentic!
The south-west is truly a diamond in the rough. It's the perfect location for those
seeking a sense of calm, genuineness and strength of character. It has recently
become home to a small number of Americans, English and Dutch who have
fallen in love with the land and purchased properties at
extremely reasonable prices. The best
way to discover the Sud-Ouest is to stay in a bed and breakfast (i.e. gite), a
hotel or even rent a house. The prices in the south-west are usually lower
then other regions in France. It has something for every budget.
When visiting the South-West, we strongly recommend having your own transportation. Renting a convertible
during the warm spring and summer seasons is a fabulous way to wander the many little
roads winding through fields, forests and villages. You will stumble upon a
variety of historical monuments without warning, sometimes located in the middle of the countryside. These structures are most often open to the public even though you may not see a
"welcome sign". If something catches your eye, simply stop, cautiously open
a door and take a look. The South-West brings out the explorer in
everyone.
Like all French regions, distances are not intimidating. One can drive from
Bordeaux to Toulouse in about two and a half hours.
From east to west and north to south, the South-West has something
for everyone. So, what are you waiting for? Begin your joyous
expedition!
