In France, like most other countries, the perception of Americans is the same.
Positive stereotypes of Americans:
- enthusiastic
- enterprising
- optimistic
Negative stereotypes of Americans:
- loud
- arrogant
- ignorant of other cultures
To help improve the image of America and Americans in the world, the group
"Business for Diplomatic Action" facilitated the creation of
small guide called World Citizens Guide. The World Citizens Guide was put together
by students for students to use
when traveling abroad, but the tips within it may be useful to you as well;
especially if this is your first trip overseas. The guide is not specifically
geared towards
France, but most of its tips apply to the French culture.One tip I have experienced many times is "do not to look a a stranger for more than three seconds". In the United States we tend to look directly into each others eyes or faces; sometimes for long periods of time. In other cultures, this can make others feel uncomfortable, or worse, may be interpreted as some kind of personal invitation! While in France, try to not stare at strangers. If you wish to look at people (who doesn't like people watching, especially in the Paris Subway?) the proper approach is to look at objects near the person, then every few seconds look at a person, then away again. Keep your eyes moving, or gazing just beyond with a nonthreatening aloofness. This may sound silly, but it actually is a wonderful tip.
