The French Artist Stereotype

I'm a creative type who as a francophile has always wondered if the French being born with incredible artistic ability is for real or is just another stereotype of the French (mostly applied to men) as seen in American cartoons and TV. I love to draw and paint since I was a little kid and sometimes I've come across somewhat silly imitations of French-accented fellows in berets being painters and talking about artwork. I'm usually very embarrassed to see that sort of thing as if I were French myself, and I disapprove of it in that it's a mockery of talent for which the French (and to some degree Italians too) are famous. I've always regarded French art with the utmost respect and admiration, and I've even been jealous of it from time to time. My favorite is realism and the works of the neo-classical legend Ingres. I wish there was a biographical movie about him!

Those of you who have French friends or sweethearts, do they happen to be good in art? Do they talk about it as a subject of conversation?

Would trying to get and maintain a career in art among the French be any easier than it is in America for cultural reasons?
Do you think Americans have pre-conceived notions that just because a guy is French means he knows how to paint beautiful landscapes and portraits? And what about the "starving artist" image that American culture seems to push? Is being an artist associated with being poor in France?

Me, I'd rather be a starving artist among the French than a starving artist in America. I guess that's my ultra-romantic side talking.

Above all, I hope American women are not necessarily blocked from getting involved in the art business with the French! I'm open to doing all kinds of painting styles and I'm willing to go along with what's popular these days.

Any French people here please don't hesitate to reply. I'd love to see your comments!
