Avignon, Past and Present

Avignon is considered one of the most ancient towns in Europe. Artifacts from the Cardial period (3000 BC) attest to it's ancient past. Since the Neolithic period (2000 BC) large groups have lived at Avignon's current location. Amongst the remarkable pieces are the steles with human characteristics, part of the Megalithic current (e.g. small, human-faced Stonehenges). Also remarkable are the little engraved suns that reflect the already growing artist aspirations of Avignon.

From this period on, Avignon becomes one of the main cities of Europe; one of the 80 cities of the Roman Empire with its own money.

Arles (52,000 residents) is located in the Provence region, and sits on a low hill where the Rhône river divides itself in two arms forming the Camargue delta. The commune is the largest in France, consisting of about 170,000 acres.  It is perhaps most famous outside of France for inspiring Van Gogh, the legendary Dutch impressionist, who painted over 200 works of art in Arles including the much loved "Sunflowers' and 'Starry Night Cafe'.

Paris: Eiffel Tower

Eiffel Tower

Already the symbol of Paris, the Eiffel Tower is also often the symbol of France. This is completely understandable once you have experienced the "shock and awe" of standing next to it. It is grand, bold and beautiful!

From atop the Eiffel Tower (accessible via a tour) you will have one of the best views of Paris. The Eiffel Tower offers 3 floors to visitors. The 1st and 2nd floors are available by either elevator or stairs. The stairs are only recommended if you do not mind breaking a sweat, especially during the hot summer months. The 3rd floor  is only available via elevator with a change of elevators on the 2nd floor. The first and second floors each offer restaurants and other amenities. "Alltitude 95" the restaurant on the first floor, is average for France. It offers a great view and is relatively affordable (around 40€ per person). The "Jules Vernes" (LE JULES VERNE) requires advanced reservations and can easily run 150€ per person.  During the high tourist season, expect a decent amount of waiting in line time to get your Eiffel Tower ticket. To help the visitors stay cool, the Eiffel Tower has recently installed a few misters.

Saint-Tropez - A "Must-See" Part Of The French Riviera

France Riviera: Saint-TropezWho was "Saint-Tropez"?

In the year 68 A.D. Knight Torpes was the highest steward of the Emperor Nero. As a devout Christian, Torpes attracted Nero's anger by refusing to accept multiple gods. The Emperor had him tortured and beheaded. His dead body was put adrift in a boat, which after several months, ended up at Heraclea. A villager recovered his body and deemed him the 'patron saint of the village', which was later renamed Saint-Tropez in his honor.

The history of this village is extremely rich, and is celebrated annually during 'the Bravades' festival from May 17th to May 19th. Although Saint-Tropez only has 5,000 permanent residents, it can become extremely crowded during the summer months.

French Riviera: We Cannes! Cannes! Cannes!

Cannes Detailed Map and Regional, Michelin map

France Riviera: Isle Saint Marguerite

History of the City: Like most French cities on the Riviera, Cannes' history dates back to pre-Roman times. Cannes as we know it today started in 1864 with Lord Brougham and Vaux (former Chancellor of England). Blocked at the Italian border because of a cholera outbreak, Brougham decided to spend the night at the Pinchinat Inn in the little fishing village of Cannes (4000 residents). He fell in love with the site and decided to build a mansion there (Eleonore Villa). Following his example many of the English high society and the Russian aristocracies started building beautiful villas and castles in the region. This influx of power and money to Cannes brought better irrigation systems and amenities for all. Today Cannes has 70000 inhabitants and is one of the most famous cities on the French Riviera.
